Educational Partnership

Our dedication to local empowerment continues through DRMP's support of Fundación Enciende Una Luz (Light A Candle Foundation), a Dominican non-profit organization based in La Romana. With underwriting from Village Church and DRMP, Light A Candle provides educationally rigorous, yet culturally sensitive training programs in sexual, maternal, and infant health. Their current program, initiated in October 2011, is called Multiplicando Luz (“Passing on the Light”).

 
Each week in the rural communities and urban barrios of La Romana, Light A Candle recruits a group of young people interested in learning more about healthy relationship choices, sexually transmitted diseases, and good breastfeeding practices. 

 
During a three-day interactive seminar, participants engage in a wide variety of activities to master these topics. Teaching tools include an educational film produced by Light A Candle, lectures from two Dominican physicians, and question and answer sessions. The promoters also participate in these classes to enhance their knowledge base and to cultivate leadership.
 

The newly trained students, after successfully completing a qualifying examination, serve as health information resources for their community to "multiply" the information they have learned. We have the unique opportunity to influence life choices and wellbeing of a new generation of Dominicans by focusing educational efforts on these motivated young leaders.
